Remembering Motörhead ...
45 rpm ? Not this time, but a rippin' LP track, and another cautionary tale I "rediscovered" from their 1995 recording - 'Sacrifice'. Recorded in Los Angeles, this record is getting harder to find in any format now.

Sonny Forriest (Sonny Forrest) 1934 - 1999
Born in North Carolina, Sonny played guitar with the Coasters in the early 60s, as well as doing a lot of studio work with others, including Ray Charles.

Rolando Alphonso 1931 ~ 1998
Compared to much music that was popular in Europe and the US during the time, I'm always amazed by the unique sounds that came out of Jamaica in the late 1950s.
Rolando Alphonso really put his own signature style of sax playing on much of the Ska and Rocksteady music that would develop later on. One can hear Mento, American Jazz, and R&B influences, but still a musical sound that was very new and all its' own for the time.
This 1958-59 recording with Clue J and the Blues Blasters, originally was pressed in Jamaica on the 'Worldisc' record label in 1959.
Though the same recording, this 'Studio One' label press is probably the second or third mid-60s press out of Jamaica.
An instrumental shuffler, 'Proof Rum' is early Ska at it's finest.

2010 reissue - Japan
Yvonne Harrison recorded about a dozen sides starting with a couple of duet records in the early 60s with Roy Panton and also Derrick Morgan. Backed by Tommy McCook's band, 'Near To You' was written by her.
Simply a fantastic reissue press of her original 1968 Caltone recording. I've always preferred finding original first press records. This is an exception. Bought it through the mail (about 12 bucks w/postage).
To run into this 45 is tough enough, especially outside the UK. Expect $200. to $400. for an original press, that is if you find someone who wants to sell it?!

I've been completely obsessed with this 45. There are a few rocksteady sides one could call haunting. Haunting, beautiful, quality rocksteady sound and vocal.

Young Lemmy
I've been a bit surprised to be thinking so much about Lemmy, his life, and his music the last few days. In fact, it's a bit weird to mourn any artist or musician for very long.
Around 1979, the first time I heard Motörhead; like many, I was truly blown away by the speed and fury, such a new and unique sound, not to mention a trio, and that voice. Lemmy attacked the bass guitar like a concert violinist would play a jack hammer...He grabbed life by the balls. He was smart, well-read, had a great sense of humor, liked to party, and got all the dirty fun women. All this really came out in the music.
People either got it or didn't.
Lemmy used to call Motörhead, "Rock N' Roll," which is really most accurate.
To call Motörhead, a "Metal" band always seemed a bit of a misnomer, just part of the picture, really.
Motörhead really had SOUL in the purest (and fastest) Rock N' Roll " Chuck Berry " tradition.
This really can't be said for a lot of "Metal" bands that play in this genre.
Very few artists truly inspire me, but Lemmy was special.
For more than 40 years, Lemmy was Motörhead, a sonic force of beauty. If we could all live our lives the way Lemmy did...We'd all be dead!
